GoUpstate: Kobelco celebrates opening of Spartanburg facility

A Japanese company that makes excavators for worldwide distribution celebrated the opening of its new $41 million facility that will create 131 jobs at the Tyger River Industrial Park in Spartanburg County. “The 156,700-square-foot plant is located on a 76-acre site. It includes a 16,400 office building, a 3,300-square-foot training building, and boasts of its eco-friendly 5K series machines meets current engine exhaust standards and reduces pollutants by 88 percent. The company currently employs 42 at the Moore plant and plans to add 131 more workers. It manufactures excavators used in construction projects around the world, said Takashi Shinozuka, general consulate of Japan. Kazuhide Naraki, president and CEO of Kobelco, said his company in part chose Spartanburg and South Carolina because of its “great support” from state and local officials.
